May 23: Happy Birthday! Hazel Boyles Grubbs

CP.29137.1

Hazel Boyles was born in Winston-Salem in 1919 to Harry O. and Vallie Forrest Boyles.  She graduated from Mineral Springs High School in 1936, and from King’s Business College in Charlotte.

She was married to Cyrus Glenn Grubbs Jr.

Hazel worked as a secretary in the neurology department at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine.  She was active in her sons’ PTA, and was encouraged to run for the Forsyth County School Board in 1958.  At that time, the county and city school systems were separate.  She was serving her third two-year term when the systems merged in 1963, and served on the first city-county board.  She decided not to seek reappointment after her last term expired.

Hazel worked as a Realtor with the Winston-Salem Board of Realtors, affiliated with Ferrell Realty, and then with Merrill Lynch.  She also managed the Georgetown Apartments.

Hazel passed away in 1989.
