May 1,1936: Stone Bench for Salem College’s May Day

May Day

On this day in 1936, an announcement appeared in the Winston-Salem Journal that a gray stone bench has been given to Salem College for use in the May Day celebration.  The bench will be placed at the head of the curving steps and will provide a seat for the May Queen.

The May Day celebration was a tradition at Salem College for many years.

The photo shows the May Day Court, and the stone bench, in 1957.
