October 11,1900: Bloodhounds Join the Police Force

Bloodhounds

The Winston police force added canine power to their ranks in 1900.  The announcement was made in the Union Republican on this day in 1900, that two well-trained bloodhounds were purchased by five members of the force.

The one-year-old bloodhounds were sent by express from Ohio.

Officers Adams, Thomas, Valentine, Davis, and Miller were the owners of the bloodhounds.  Officer Adams was in charge of them.

Apparently the newspaper had frequently mentioned that keen-scented bloodhounds would prove a benefit to the police force.  It is not known how successful the bloodhounds were in tracking transgressors and earning their keep.  However, they probably attracted plenty of attention, as the article mentions that they were “as pretty as a picture.”
