October 11: Happy Birthday! Undine Futrell Johnson

Undine Futrell Johnson was born on this day in 1889, at Scotland Neck, to John P. and Nora Tillery Futrell.

She attended Vine Hill Female Academy in Scotland Neck and Meredith College.

She came to Winston-Salem in 1910 and taught music for three years, and she also taught seventh grade English.

Undine married Dr. Wingate Johnson in 1914.

Undine helped her sister, Louise Futrell, when she started the Summit School in her home on Summit Street.

She was also involved with the YWCA, serving for six years as president of the YWCA.  She was on the board for 12 years.  When the cornerstone was installed at the new Glade Street YWCA, Undine placed a box of mementos in the cornerstone.

Undine served several churches as organist and choir director.

She operated the gift shop at Baptist Hospital for many years.

Undine passed away in 1969.
