July 3,1958: Demolition of Schrimger Building

FJ.11087

On this day in 1958, demolition began on the Schrimger Building on South Main Street.  The Greek-style stucco structure (seen at the far right in the above photo) was used as an apartment building for several years.

The building is being razed so that the Miksch Tobacco Shop can be restored next door.

The Schrimger Building was the first piece of property to be purchased by Old Salem.  As far as is known, the building does not hold historical significance, but the demolition crew is moving cautiously, just in case they find evidence of an earlier structure.

Demolition has begun on Welfare’s Drug Store, located at the center and left, which originally housed the tobacco shop.
