June 18,1964: Salem Tavern’s New Designation

Salem Tavern

On this day in 1964, the Salem Tavern building was designated a National Historic Landmark by the U. S. Department of the Interior.

Salem Tavern was one of 452 sites that “possess exceptional value in commemorating or illustrating the history of the United States.”

Today visitors to Old Salem can tour the building where many travelers, such as  President George Washington, spent the night and enjoyed the  hospitality of the Moravians.
