June 18: Happy Birthday! John Edgar Frederick Bennett

John Edgar Frederick Bennett was born on this day in 1889, in Salem, to Charles Edward and Emma Axsom Bennett.  He was one of at least 12 children; ten sons and two daughters are known.

He was educated at the public schools in Salem and at the Salem Boys School.

He worked with his father in the C. E. Bennett Marble and Granite Works.

Edgar was a member of Home Moravian Church, Salem Masonic Lodge 289, and the Oasis Temple.

Edgar passed away in 1956.

The photo above shows an ad from the J. A. and C. E. Bennett Granite Works, in 1906.  The Bennett brothers also owned and operated Winston-Salem Bottling Works.  Both businesses were located at 430 W. Fourth Street in 1906.  The names of the businesses changed over time.
