March 3: Happy Birthday! Augustus G. Fogle

FJ.03712

Augustus G. Fogle was born in Salem in 1820.  During his lifetime of 77 years, he had many occupations and traveled many miles.

Augustus was a woodworker, and made over 40 pulpits for churches and chapels,  fashioned many walking sticks with decorative headings, and built household furnishings of all kinds.

He also worked as steward of Salem Female Academy, Sheriff of Forsyth County (1878-1884), Mayor of Salem, Forsyth County coroner, Justice of the Peace, and held other community offices.  He also served as sexton for Home Moravian Church for 60 years, and helped with making coffee for the lovefeasts.

He documented his travels that covered many thousands of miles, and prepared a book of his reminiscences from 1828 to 1896.

When he passed away in 1897, he was buried in the coffin that he made ten years earlier.  He made it from a walnut tree that grew on property at his boyhood home, which his mother had planted.
