April Feast: Sam’s Gourmet’s Beef Tips

Do you remember Sam’s Gourmet Restaurant, located on the lower level of Thruway Shopping Center?  The restaurant opened in 1966, owned and operated by Sam Pappas, shown in the photo above.  To learn more about the restaurant, see the post at http://winstonsalemtimetraveler.com/2014/07/01/july-11966-sams-gourmet-opens/

In addition to the great salad bar at Sam’s, the entrees that were served were very tasty and memorable.

Here’s a recipe for Sam’s Beef Tips.  Maybe the taste will transport you to a time when you enjoyed the dish at the restaurant, seated in one of the plush leather chairs at Sam’s.

Sam’s Gourmet’s Beef Tips

Ingredients:

1 to 2 pounds sirloin, cut into chunks

Oil

5 Maggi beef bouillon cubes

1 heaping teaspoon dry Lipton onion soup mix

2 cups water

1 can (about 4 ounces) mushrooms (undrained)

¾ cup Taylor Sauterne

Directions:

Brown the meat in a scant amount of oil. Drain and return to the pan.

Combine all other ingredients, except the wine; pour mixture over the beef tips.

Bring to a boil, and then lower the heat. Add wine and cook 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Serve over toast points.

Notes:

If using 2 pounds of beef, you may wish to add more onion soup mix.

The Maggi bouillon cubes may be hard to find in local stores.  You can try another brand or search for them online.

The Taylor Sauterne is an inexpensive sweet white wine made in New York and sold in many supermarkets.
