April 11: Happy Birthday! Fred Wilson Pfaff

Fred Wilson Pfaff was born on this day in 1907, in Winston-Salem, to Samuel and Mary Ann Wilson Pfaff.

Fred graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School and Moravian College in Bethlehem, Pa.

After graduation, he joined his father, founder of Pfaff’s Inc.,  in business and he started the paint business in the 1930s.

Fred was  a member of Home Moravian Church.  He played in the Moravian Band for over 70 years, and was an honorary trustee of the Moravian Music Foundation.

He was a member of the Civitan Club and the Retail Merchants Association, where he served as past-president.

Fred passed away in 1993.

    When I saw this kind face while browsing thru the history, I had to comment on how generous and beloved this man was. All who knew him remembered that he was never too busy to help his employees and many others who needed a helping hand. My son, Douglas Pfaff (fourth generation, now at Pfaff Auto Glass) recalls how his grandfather used to greet him at the door to his office upstairs to motion him over to his desk lower drawer where he kept well stocked chewing gum and treats. This was a frequent occurance during his young years.
