This monument was dedicated to Calvin Henderson Wiley, North Carolina Superintendent of Common Schools.  School children raised the money for the monument, which was originally installed on the corner of West Fourth and Broad Street in 1904.

West End School and the primary school were demolished in 1947, and the statue was moved to the grounds of Wiley School, which opened in 1925.
