February 24, 1927: Urband Building Collapses

FJ.03903

Frank Urband operated a clothing store at 411 N. Main Street.  On this day in 1927, the wall of his building collapsed, causing much excitement in downtown Winston-Salem.

The photo shows the crowd that gathered on North Main Street.  The Urband building was at the left, and the photo is looking south, toward the Main and Fourth Streets intersection.

This area was undergoing change due to the impending removal of the former Town Hall at the corner of Main and Fourth in anticipation of the construction of the Reynolds Building in its place.  Some other buildings in this block were also being removed.
