January 6: Happy Birthday! Hettie Mabel Reinhardt

Hettie Mabel Reinhardt was born in North Carolina in 1879. She worked as a nursing instructor at both Baptist and City Memorial Hospitals in Winston-Salem.

In 1915, Hettie volunteered to work in a unit organized by the National Red Cross Headquarters. She was appointed for service in Russia, where she worked in an 800-bed hospital, under the auspices of the Russian Red Cross. She worked there for seven months, then returned to the United states because of increasing tensions before World War I.

Hettie and her sister, Louise, volunteered to serve as nurses during World War I. They joined Dr. Stuart McGuire’s Hospital Unit No. 45. They spent eight months in Camp Sevier, Greenville, South Carolina, then they were sent to France and worked in Base Hospital No. 87 at Toul. Hettie worked as chief nurse in this hospital. She and her sister returned to the United States in 1919.

Hettie and Louise moved to St. Petersburg, Florida. Hettie died in 1953.
