Wayback Wednesday: Sheets Bar-B-Q, Then & Now

If you drive Highway 158 (S. Stratford Road) between Hanes Mall Boulevard and Clemmons, you might remember this building. It is located between Faw Road and Old Sides Mill Road. It is also near a new intersection with a turnoff that goes to Idol’s Road.

The address for the building is 3010 S. Stratford Road. But in earlier days, when the building housed Sheets Bar-B-Q, the address was 402 Clemmons Road. According to the signs on the building, the restaurant also offered sandwiches, ice cream (Coble’s), and curb service.

Sheets Bar-B-Q was owned and operated by Leroy Sheets (1924-1985). When Sheets died in 1984, he was the owner and operator of Sheets Drive-In in Advance.

The building has been occupied by several different businesses over the years. Today, Blue Dolphin Dive Center occupies this space.

There have been several additions to the building over the years as well.

Perhaps the most dramatic change to the area has been the construction of the new intersection that reroutes some of the traffic from Idol’s Road.

If you have details or memories of the building when it was Sheets Bar-B-Q, please comment.
