December 19: Happy Birthday! James Robert Crutchfield Jr.

James R. Crutchfield

James Robert Crutchfield Jr. was born on this day in 1896, in Winston-Salem, to James Robert and Eva Louise Conrad Crutchfield.

Crutchfield served in the United States Army during World War I and he served on the Winston-Salem police force for 15 years.  For part of that time, he was a member of the Detective Division.

He lived in Washington, D. C. and Silver Springs, Maryland for several years, and he worked for the R. E. Lamer Company as an engineer.  He returned to Winston-Salem about 1969.

Crutchfield was married to Maude Simpson Crutchfield, and he passed away in 1979.

The photo above shows Crutchfield as a detective with the “Spider Gang,” of the Winston-Salem Detective Division.
