November 9,1958: Hanes Community Center Is Dedicated

Hanes Community Center

The James G. Hanes Community Center on Coliseum Drive was built to house offices for the United Fund, Arts Council, and Chamber of Commerce.

John D. Rockefeller III spoke at the dedication of the community center on this day in 1958.

James G. Hanes center

The center was named for James Gordon Hanes, former chairman of the Board of Hanes Hosiery Mills.  Mr. Hanes was well-known for his public service.  He was a board member for all three of the agencies that were moving to the center.
