November 8: Happy Birthday! Flora Ann Lee Bynum

Flora Ann Lee Bynum was born on this day in 1924, in Guilford County, to William and Hattie Clark Lee.

She graduated from Meredith College and worked for the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce.

Flora served as chairman of the Old Salem Landscape Restoration Committee, and was a member of the Old Salem Board of Trustees.

Flora helped found the Southern Garden History Society and served as secretary/treasurer for more than 20 years.

She also served as treasurer of the Wachovia Historical Society for 20 years, and was awarded the Archie K. Davis Award.

Flora was involved in several horticultural and gardening organizations, and was honored by them over the years.  She was recognized as an authority on Moravian horticulture and was a plant historian.  Flora opened her garden in Old Salem to visitors, and encouraged people to enjoy her plants.

She was married to Zachary Taylor Bynum Jr.  and passed away in 2006.
