He spent his childhood in Boonville, Yadkinville and Monroe, and graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School in 1945.
He graduated from Brevard College and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

He was an active member of the Twin City Kiwanis Club and First Presbyterian Church.
Martin participated in a variety of sports, and particularly enjoyed playing baseball, tennis and golf.
Martin was a talented artist, and he drew and painted for his personal pleasure. He also illustrated personnel manuals for the City of Winston-Salem.
Martin was particularly proud of his Scottish heritage, and participated in the Klan McKay Society. He also traveled to Scotland to see the home of his ancestors.
When he was a child, he acquired the nickname, “Buddy,” and was called Buddy by his classmates and family. When his niece and nephews came along, the name was shortened to “Dee,” and he was always Dee to them.
