November 7,1926: Augsburg Lutheran’s New Church

FJ.04538

Rev. W. A. Lutz traveled to Winston-Salem from Charlotte on this day in 1926, to deliver the principal address at the service for laying the cornerstone for the new Augsburg Lutheran Church.  Rev. Lutz was the former pastor of Augsburg.  The church is located on West Fifth Street near Summit Street.

Thirty-three years earlier, Rev. Lutz  officiated at the laying of the cornerstone at the previous location of Augsburg Lutheran Church.  The church was located on the corner of  West Fourth and Spruce Streets.

A few days before the groundbreaking, a small copper box was taken from the cornerstone at the old Lutheran Church.  It contained the minutes of the United Synod and other documents related to the Lutheran Church.

The new cornerstone contained copies of the local newspapers, church papers, a Bible, and other records.
