February 20, 1963: Piedmont Airlines Retires DC3

FJ.12314

This day in 1963 was a special occasion for Piedmont Airlines for several reasons.  It marked the 15th anniversary for the airlines, when the first DC3 flew from Wilmington to Cincinnati in 1948.

The 1963 celebration also included the commemoration of the retirement of the last DC3 airplane at the company.  A special flight flew the same route as in 1948, with the original pilot and copilot at the controls.

In the photo, Piedmont president Tom Davis is at the center of the group,  flanked by company officials and crew members.
