October 18: Happy Birthday! Amelia Adelaide Van Vleck

Amelia Adelaide Van Vleck was born on this day in 1834, in Pennsylvania, to Carl Anton and Christiana Susan Kramsch Van Vleck.

Her father was a Moravian minister in Pennsylvania when she was born.  They moved to Tennessee for her father to do educational work.  After his death in 1845, the family moved to Salem to make their home on South Main Street.

Amelia attended Salem Female Academy and completed her course in 1851.  She had musical talent and became a music teacher at Salem.  She taught at Salem continuously for more than 50 years.

She also served as pianist for the Home Moravian Church Sunday School for more than 50 years.  And, she and her sister traveled extensively.

When she passed away in 1929, at the age of 93, she was reported to be the oldest woman in Winston-Salem.
