Kate Bitting Reynolds was born on this day in 1867, in Yadkin County, to Joseph and Louisa Wilson Bitting.
She came to Winston as a child with her family.
She was married to William Neal Reynolds in 1889. They lived on West Fifth Street, and also had a home near Clemmons, called Tanglewood Farms. They eventually left their Fifth Street house and lived at Tanglewood Farms exclusively.
Mrs. Reynolds was involved in many community activities. She was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was one of the founders of the General Joseph Winston Chapter and held several local and state offices.
She was particularly interested in health care, and was part of a group of local women who established the first hospital in Winston-Salem. The Twin City Hospital was located on Brookstown Avenue. A new City Memorial Hospital was built later on East Fourth Street.
William Neal Reynolds gave the city money to build a hospital for Negroes. It was named the Kate Bitting Reynolds Memorial Hospital, and was completed in 1938.
Mrs. Reynolds passed away in 1946.
