January 21, 1935: New Senior Rating for Two High Schools

South High School

On this date: January 21, 1935.  North and South High Schools will attain senior rating with the inauguration of eleventh grade work beginning today.  Both schools opened several years ago as junior units and will add to the curriculum to provide eleventh grade instruction.

Senior rating for the schools was provided by the city school board in the fall of 1933.  At that time both units had grades through 9A with tenth grade students going to Reynolds High School.  A half-grade a semester has been added to both schools since the first semester of the 1933-34 school term.

The photograph is a 1940 view of South High School which later became James A. Gray High School.  Even later, Gray High School was incorporated into the School of the Arts campus.
