September 4,1953:Baptist Retirement Home Planned

Baptist Home

On this day in 1953, an announcement appeared in the Winston-Salem Journal that a 34-acre tract of land was recently purchased on Reynolds Park Road.  The land is the future site of the North Carolina Baptist Home for the Aged.

Reverend James M. Hayes, superintendent of the home, said that building will start when money is available for the purpose.

The Baptist Home was located at that time at 1900 Kentucky Avenue.  It was previously the Junior League Hospital, then was converted to a nursing home.

The new facility opened in 1957, and it included a small infirmary.  Reverend Hayes retired in 1960, and the facility was named the Hayes Home in his honor.
