August 6: Happy Birthday! Ethel Angelo Williams

Ethel Angelo Williams

Ethel Angelo Williams was born on this day in 1918, in Winston-Salem, to Ernest J. and Ethel Hudgins Angelo.

Ethel or “Angie”  graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School and attended Salem College.  At the outbreak of World War II she was working for the North Carolina Employment Service.

Angie was one of the first women from Forsyth County to enlist in the Women’s Army Air Corps.  She attended officer candidate school in Fort Des Moines, Iowa, and received her commission as a second lieutenant.

She was also stationed at Camp Davis in North Carolina and Fort Sills in Oklahoma.  She was discharged in 1945 with the rank of captain.

After the war Angie worked at a mail-order plant in Greensboro, and met Bob Williams.  They were married in 1948, and Bob went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration.  During their marriage they moved to several duty  stations in many different states.

They lived abroad in 1974, in Brussels, Belgium.  They lived in a high-rise apartment in town, and immersed themselves in the local culture.  They also traveled extensively in Europe.

Bob retired in 1976 and they moved to Neptune Beach, a previous home location, and lived there until 2002.  They were active in local organizations, and Angie played bridge, a game she loved.

Angie and Bob moved to Troy, Indiana, in 2002, to be near family.  Angie passed away in 2013.
