July 24,1914: New YWCA Building

FJ.16250

On this day in 1914, an announcement was made by a committee of the site for a proposed YWCA building.

The YWCA was organized in 1908 in the First Presbyterian Church.

The choice of a site for a permanent home is the S. F. Vance property on the corner of First and Church Streets.  This is where Colonel Gibson, a native of Germanton, resided until his death.

The late Dr. W. H. Wheeler secured it from Colonel Gibson and made it his home for many years.  During the past few years Mr. Vance made it his home.

The new YWCA facility opened in 1917, and featured a swimming pool and tennis courts.
