June 3, 2011: Art Expression Wall

Expression wall

On this day in 2011, an art expression wall was unveiled in downtown Winston-Salem.

The “Word Wall” is located on Trade Street outside of Breakfast of Course (Mary’s Too).  The wall is a glass-mosaic quilt of words and letters.

Artist Jan Detter teamed up with an organization called Authoring Action, in which teenage authors draw on their experiences to write literature for a variety of purposes.

Detter designed the wall and others helped her install it.  The Authoring Action teens supplied the words for the wall, and painted the letters backwards on the back sides of safety-glass tiles.  The transparent tiles protect the words from the natural elements.

Another art expression wall is located on Spruce Street between the Winston Square Park and the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts.
