April 18: Happy Birthday! James Edgar Gay Jr.

James Edgar Gay Jr. was born on this day in 1898, in Greensboro, to James E.  and Margaret Gay.

He attended Emory and Henry College, and Trinity College.  He received his law degree from the University of Maryland.

From 1918 to 1923 he worked in the Judicial Department of Fidelity and Deposit Company.  And, from 1923 to 1925, he was claims manager with Commercial Union Insurance Company.

He practiced law in Winston-Salem about 1926 to 1928, and formed Gay and Taylor Insurance Adjustors in 1928.  At the time of his death in 1974, Gay and Taylor had 102 offices in 15 states and the District of Columbia.  They offered multiple line claim services for the insurance industry.

Mr. Gay was active in professional and community organizations.  He was a charter member of the National Association of Independent Insurance Adjustors, and served as their president in 1964-65.
