Winston-Salem Jaycees placed the first luminous red, white and clue sign proclaiming Winston-Salem as an All-American City of 1959 on US 421 west at Reynolda and West Polo Roads on this day in 1960.

This sign was the first of fourteen signs that were to be placed at the city limits at major thoroughfares.

Labor and materials for the signs were furnished by Fence Builders.

The photo above shows Mayor M. C. Benton at left at the podium, with the All-America City emblem in the background at right.  Winston-Salem won the prestigious designation in 1959 and 1964.
