People’s Shoe Store opened on this day in 1911.  It was located in the new Masten Building on the corner of Main and Fourth Streets.  In the photo above, the streetcar is passing right in front of the Masten Building.  It is on the corner across the street from the Winston Town Hall.

The store was owned by W. C. Wright and Company, and was managed by Efird L. Hine.  Working with Hine was Frank D. Jones, formerly an employee of Boyles Brothers.

The store carried Queens Quality line of shoes for ladies, and Burt and Packard’s Correct Shape for men.  They also carried several grades of shoes, plus a line of guaranteed patent leathers.

This particular shoe store, under this name, did not last to 1918.  By 1918, Efird Hine had opened his own shoe store on Fourth Street, and the former People’s Shoe Store was under the name of W. C. Wright and Company.

See more information on Efird Hine on April 8th, when he is featured on his birthday.
