February 10: Happy Birthday! Marvin Ward

Marvin Ward was born in Virginia in 1914.  He graduated from East Bend High School and Appalachian State University, and earned a master’s degree in education administration from UNC.

Ward worked in the city schools for 25 years, then was appointed superintendent of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools where he served for 13 years.  He was superintendent for one year before the city and county school systems combined in 1963.

Ward retired from the school system in 1976.

He was elected to the N. C. Senate in 1978, and served until 1994.  He was the chairman of the Senate Education Appropriations Committee.

Ward Elementary School was named in his honor.  Marvin Ward passed away in 2008.
