February 9, 1932: Ideal Dry Goods Relocates

W. Fourth Street stores

The Ideal Dry Goods store opened on this date in its new location in the Chatham Building on West Fourth Street.  The women’s garment business was in its 20th year of operation, and moved from its previous location at 414 North Trade Street.

The opening events featured a brief dedication program, followed in the afternoon with a style review of the latest spring fashions, modeled by Junior League members.  An orchestra supplied musical accompaniment to the fashion show.

The new store, which was 40% larger,  added a shoe department, an infant and children’s department, and a beauty shop was in the plans as soon as equipment could be installed.

The basement housed the home goods department, and the store also carried piece goods, leather items, and jewelry.
