February 2: Happy Birthday! John Hugh Davis

Hugh Davis

John Hugh Davis was born in Forsyth County in 1911.  His parents were Richard Thomas and Jeanettie Shermer Davis.  Hugh lived on Reynolda Road, along with many of his Davis relatives who also built homes near the Reynolda/Polo/Fairlawn Road area.

Hugh’s father, Richard Thomas “Dick” Davis, owned an 80-acre farm on Reynolda Road.  He dug a pond in connection with a brick-making business on his farm.  The pond became Crystal Lake, which later evolved into a  public swimming pool and recreation area.  Hugh and his wife, Helen, operated the pool beginning in 1949, until they retired and closed the pool in 1975.

Hugh and Helen were charter members of College Park Baptist Church.  The church met at Crystal Lake in its early days while the first church building was being constructed.  Hugh also enjoyed growing roses and was a member of the American Rose Society.  Hugh passed away in 1984.
