John Henry Boner, well-known poet and journalist, was born in this house in Salem in 1845. He was one of four children born to Thomas Jacob and Phoebe Boner.
The house was built by Martin Lick in the 1780s. The next resident of the house was in the salt trade, which gave the street (Salt Street) its name. He also added a lean-to on the side of the house for his workshop.
John Henry Boner published several volumes of poetry, and worked at the General Printing Office in Washington, D. C., and as literary editor of the New York World. Boner died in 1902.
