Yes! This is definitely “Shelton’s Lake” in Pfafftown. I learned to swim in that lake in organized community swimming lessons. My Mother faithfully took my sister, my brother and I to summer swimming lessons. Some of my fondest summer childhood memories originated there…swimming with my siblings and friends. The snack bar offered welcomed treats after swimming until we were so tired we could drop. I remember the great hot dogs and the “cherry” Cokes. All this took place in the late ’50’s.
It was owned by Ivor H Shelton and ILA Tucker Shelton. William H Shelton was their son Carolyn Shelton daughter-in-law.
It was established in 1952 to around 1986.
The picture you have is of the lake.
They were my grand parents and parents.
Lots of church baptisms on Sunday morning and Wake Forest parties. Family reunions fish fry’s and picnics.
Confession stand with hot dogs ice cream and fountain drinks and frozen candy bars.
Juke box for shag dancers!!
Tire tubes for rent to float on.
Great times and memories!!

I am a daughter of Iver’s brother William Garland shelton. That great I actually found some history on this.
I have very fond memories of Shelton’s Lake. I was a lifeguard there the summers of ’65 and ’66. Mr. Ivor Shelton was my boss. He was a stern taskmaster to say the least. But I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. We kept the lake very clean and tidy, raking the sand and picking up thousands of cigarette butts. One of the best times of my life!
I remember going to Shelton Lake just about every day during the summer of 1977. That summer I attended day camp through the Central YMCA and they had their program at Shelton Lake that summer. It was incredibly hot that summer, especially in July and the water was always refreshing, even chilly to my 10 year old self in the morning when we had swimming lessons. We would have a full day of swimming lessons, hiking in the woods. playing whiffle ball, kick ball, and other sports. We would have arts and crafts in the building right next to the lake and daily devotions by the shore of the lake. I’ll never forget the fun we had with greased watermelon games. Similar to Rugby but in the water trying go get the Crisco slathered watermelon onto the opposing team’s shore. A few times we would have an overnight stay at Shelton Lake as well.
The picture on this page is exactly as I remember the lake. Same shape, sandy beach, a swimming dock, and a high dive platform on the far end of the lake. Such a fun summer.
