BR.00045-5a

The Thunderbird Drive-In Theatre opened on this day in 1967.  It was formerly the Skyview Drive-In, and was located at 3774 Konnoak Drive.

The Skyview Drive-In opened in 1948, and it was the second drive-in to open in Winston-Salem.  The first drive-in was the Winston-Salem Drive-In.  See the October 4th post to read more about the Winston-Salem Drive-In.

Opening features for the Thunderbird were “Ghost and Mr. Chicken,” starring Don Knotts, “Get Yourself a College Girl,” starring Nancy Sinatra and Herman’s Hermits, and “Torn Curtain,” starring Paul Newman and Julie Andrews.  And to top off the opening night events was a fireworks display, with fun prizes, and an appearance by Santa Claus.

The $1.00 entrance fee also covered payment for a pre-movie concert by a top combo, Harry and the Impalas.
