November 24,1910: First Southbound Coach Travels

Winston-Salem Southbound train

The first passenger coach to go over the Southbound tracks left Winston-Salem in the afternoon of this day in 1910.  It was Thanksgiving Day, and the train went to Wadesboro.

The coach rode behind  N&W  50-ton locomotive Number 519, and N&W coach Number 957.  It left the N&W freight depot at 12:35, and there was a large crowd gathered to see it leave.  The throttle was opened by Southbound Railroad President Henry E. Fries.

The train arrived in Wadesboro at 7:00 pm, and returned the following day.

The grand opening celebration of the Southbound was held in Winston-Salem in December, with great fanfare and a full schedule of events.

While the Southbound coach is mentioned and no number, there are no pictures of a Winston-Salem Southbound coach. I hope someone will find one ! or a passenger train.
