November 15: Happy Birthday! Mary Eliza “Mamie” Gray Galloway

Mary Eliza “Mamie” Gray Galloway was born on this day in 1876, in Winston-Salem, to James A. and Aurelia Bowman Gray.

Mamie attended Salem Academy and Miss Carey’s School in Baltimore.

She married Alexander Henderson Galloway Jr. in 1901.  Galloway worked in several businesses, such as R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and Wachovia Bank & Trust Company.  He organized the Forsyth Hotel Company, and built the Zinzendorf Hotel in 1906.  He managed the hotel for several years.

Mamie was active in community affairs, particularly in the work of the Twin City Hospital.

Her husband died in an auto accident in 1935, and Mamie suffered a stroke after his accident.  She was an invalid from that time until her death in 1944.
