Charles M. Jones was born on this day in 1870, in Orange County, to Manly and Mary Jones.
In his younger days, he played baseball and was the pitcher for a local team. In Oxford, he played for the Torchlight Baseball Team. And, in 1889, he pitched for a North Carolina championship team.
Charles was a tobacco buyer in Winston-Salem, and throughout the Carolinas and Kentucky.
He often stayed for several months in Winston-Salem, and during that time he lived with his nephew, Winston-Salem Journal photographer Frank Jones, on Brookstown Avenue.
Charles passed away in 1952.
