August 20,1960: Firestone Store Demolished

Firestone Store

On this day in 1960, demolition began on the old Firestone store at Fifth and Cherry Streets.  It was located across from the Robert E. Lee Hotel.  The photo above shows the Firestone store (left) at Fifth and Cherry Streets in 1948.

A new Firestone store had recently opened on Fifth Street, at the corner of Spring Street.

A home was previously at this location, and was recently demolished.  It was the Dr. David N. Dalton house, but had been used for other purposes in the last few years.

Today, Bib’s Downtown Barbecue Restaurant is located on this site.  The owners of Bib’s remodeled the former Firestone store, which had also been used for other purposes.
