July 23,1938: Farmers’ Co-Operative Dairy Groundbreaking

FJ.11875

On this day in 1938, ground was broken for the Farmers’ Co-Operative Dairy on South Marshall Street.

The $40,000 building will house a common distributing point for members of the co-operative organization.  The dairy will pasteurize milk, distribute raw milk to customers desiring it, make chocolate milk, butter, cottage cheese, buttermilk, sweet cream butter, and ice cream.

It will also distribute eggs for its members.

A new plant was built in 1961 on North Cherry Street.  The old building was demolished in 1962.

    Molly,
I really enjoy your Winston Salem Time Traveler series and look forward to it everyday. (Even though you did not feature me on my birthday.) Small correction…Farmer’s Dairy was on South Marshall Street not s. Main Street. It was at the corner of Marshall St. and Salem Ave. beside Jones Bakery. I love these little snippets of history.
