On this day in 1959, Gospel singer Mahalia Jackson, made her first visit to Winston-Salem.
Mahalia sang a recital of gospel music in the Atkins High School gymnasium under the sponsorship of the WAAA Foundation, an auxiliary of the radio station.
Approximately 1,200 people attended the recital.
