On this day in 1939, Helen Keller (left) and her companion, Polly Thompson (right), took the stage at the Carolina Theatre to speak at the State Lions Convention.

Miss Keller represented the American Foundation for the Blind, and spoke on behalf of blind people.

Miss Thompson interpreted the questions asked by people in the audience with fingers in hand motions for Miss Keller, who was blind and deaf.

Miss Thompson replaced Miss Keller’s longtime companion, Anne Sullivan Macy, who died in 1936.
