March 9: Happy Birthday! Dr. Louis D. Shaffner

Dr. Louis de Schweinitz Shaffner was born in 1916, in Winston-Salem.  He was the son of  Henry Fries and Agnes Gertrude Siewers Shaffner.

Dr. Shaffner graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School, Asheville School,  the University of North Carolina, and Harvard Medical School.

At the onset of World War II, Dr. Shaffner became a medical officer in the Navy, serving on the battleship USS New Jersey BB-62 and the destroyer USS Luce DD-522.

After the war, Dr. Shaffner returned to Winston-Salem and completed his training at Bowman Gray School of Medicine, and he joined the faculty of the school in 1951.

He practiced general surgery, and was named professor emeritus of surgery in 1985.  He received the Distinguished Service Award from the Medical Alumni Association of Bowman Gray in 1992.

Dr. Shaffner was active in professional associations, and was on the Board of Trustees of Forsyth Memorial Hospital from 1969 to 1982.  He was also active at Home Moravian Church, and played in the Moravian Band.

Dr. Shaffner passed away in 2006.
