February 19, 1913: Fire at Brown, Rogers and Company

FJ.03340

Fire destroyed the hardware business building of Brown, Rogers and Company on the corner of Fourth and Main Streets in the early hours of this day in 1913.  Also damaged were the Frank C. Brown & Sons Company (men’s clothing), and the Eagles’ Club rooms that were located over the Brown, Rogers store.  Stock for the businesses was also destroyed.

Damage to the businesses was estimated at $140,000.

The fire was the cause of the delay in getting out the Winston-Salem Journal, because the power lines were pulled down by the falling walls of the buildings, and the current had to be cut off for safety.

Frank C. Brown & Sons Company rebuilt their business at 105 W. Fourth Street and the Eagles’ Club relocated there as well.

Brown, Rogers and Company moved to the 500 block of Liberty Street, and their new building extended through the block to Main Street.
