January 17, 1917: Streetcar Tracks to Extend to Depot

FJ.03173-2

On this date: January 17, 1917.  An announcement was made in the Winston-Salem Journal that approval was given to lay streetcar tracks to the passenger train station by way of Depot Street (later called Patterson Avenue), which ran behind the station.  The idea was that any streetcar in town could reach the station, and in-coming travelers could take the streetcar to the city.

The train station shown in the photo was located on Chestnut Street, between Third and Fourth Streets.  It was designed by well-known architect, Frank Milburn, who also designed the train station in Salisbury.

Great lesson here. Streetcar tracks need to go to the train station. I hope our leaders do not forget when laying out the new system. Also connect with communter rail
