On this day in 1941, WSJS Radio formally opened their new home on North Spruce Street.
WSJS Radio began in 1930, and the studio was originally located on the second floor of the Journal-Sentinel Building, on Marshall Street. The new Spruce Street building was behind the Journal-Sentinel building, and the lot was previously occupied by a residence.
When WSJS Radio began, it was not affiliated with any network. In 1933 it joined the Columbia Broadcasting System. And, in 1940, the station was affiliated with the National Broadcasting Company.
Television broadcasting began for WSJS-TV in 1953. The television studios and offices also occupied the Spruce Street building. A site on Coliseum Drive was purchased in 1963 for a future studio and office building. Ground was broken in 1965 for the new building, and Broadcast House was occupied in 1966.
Today, WSJS Radio is located at 875 West Fifth Street.
