Mary Elizabeth “Mollie” Watkins was born on this day in 1865, near Clemmons, to Henry and Sara Watkins.
Mollie moved with her family to Salem as a young girl. She attended Salem Academy and College.
She married Dr. William Joseph Conrad in 1890. Dr. Watkins was a local dentist and church leader.
Mollie was active in church work at First Baptist Church, and in civic affairs. In 1918, she was in charge of Winston-Salem’s cannery. This was a new venture for the city that encouraged women to bring their home-grown vegetables and other food to a central location to have the food canned for their families.
In 1935 she and her family moved to Hilltop Farm, their homeplace, which was 14 miles west of the city.
Mollie Conrad passed away in 1949.
