Here’s view of West Fourth Street, facing east and taken from Spring Street, dated January 1963.
There have been a few changes in the look of this street over the last 55 years. How many of the businesses that have disappeared can you find in this photo?
See if you can locate these businesses: Winston Theatre, Goodyear Service Store, Odell Matthews Motors, Bocock-Stroud Company, F. W. Woolworth Store, Carolina Hotel and Theatre, O’Hanlon Building, R. J. Reynolds Building, Pepper Building, Nissen Building, J. C. Penney Store, Thalhimers Department Store, Uptown Esso Service Station, Bolich Building, Doby’s Bakery, and Greystone Downtown Motel.
Also, notice that West Fourth Street was a one-way street at this time.
