Do You Remember…Major League Bowling Lanes?

Farmer’s Dairy Bar opened on S. Stratford Road in 1954.  The Dairy Bar occupied the front part of the building. A wing at the left, behind and perpendicular to the building, housed an A&P Grocery Store.

A wing at the right, also behind and perpendicular to the building, was occupied by Major League Bowling Lanes (shown above).  Many people learned to bowl at Major League Lanes and participated in league bowling.  Major League also sponsored tournaments, such as the Winston-Salem Bowling Classic.

The photographs shown above were taken at the 1971 Winston-Salem Bowling Classic.  A banner indicates there was an $80,000 purse for the tournament.  Pennants featuring the names of the bowlers were situated over each of the bowling lanes.  Seated at each table was an individual with a shirt marked “Official Scorer.”  Remember the days when you actually had to know how to score the bowling game and could bowl a practice frame without being charged?

Farmer’s Dairy Bar became Mayberry’s Ice Cream Shoppe and the building was later demolished.  Mayberry’s moved to Miller Street.  The A&P was later replaced by a Lowe’s Hardware store. Five Points Restaurant and several smaller shops occupy this site today.
